Semi-Orthopaedic Footwear

In addition to orthopaedic shoes, which are completely made to measure by means of a plaster print, you can also obtain semi-orthopaedic shoes or correction shoes from us. These are existing shoes that can be adjusted to the problems of the patient, in most cases children with a growth abnormality at the foot. Thanks to the removable footbed, it is also possible to easily insert support soles here.

How can I obtain semi-orthopaedic shoes?

These shoes are measured on the basis of a tape measure or and are in some cases fully or partially reimbursed by the health insurance fund. The amount of reimbursement depends on the condition (diabetes, wheelchair-bound), age or wearing an orthosis. Ordinary ready-to-wear shoes are not provided for this and are usually too small.

Reimbursement of Semi-Orthopaedic Shoes

Semi-orthopaedic shoes are partially reimbursed for children up to the age of 18. Adults can only enjoy a reimbursement if they are diabetic or in a wheelchair. It is important to know that you need a prescription from a medical specialist to enjoy a partial or full reimbursement.

You can therefore enjoy a reimbursement for semi-orthopaedic shoes in the following cases:

  • Diabetic (annual)
  • Wheelchair-bound patients (annually)
  • Children with growth abnormalities or children wearing orthoses (3x a year up to 5 years and 2x a year up to the age of 18).

Different types of semi-orthopaedic shoes

Normal shoes

Normal shoes are semi-orthopaedic shoes with a straight last. These have a reinforced contour, giving them more support to the ankle. It is certainly also possible to wear insoles here.

Antivarus shoes

Antivarus shoes are semi-orthopaedic shoes with an inverted last. They, too, have a reinforced counterfort. These shoes are constructed at the height of the ball of the foot so that they provide a correction to the outside of the foot. Antivarus shoes are usually used with children with adductus feet (walking with an inward turned forefoot).

Orthotic shoes

Orthotic shoes are used as an overshoe for children who wear orthoses with the purpose of correcting the ankle or foot. It is often a difficult task to find suitable ready-to-wear shoes that fit nicely over the orthosis. These shoes are therefore specially constructed so that the length is retained, while the heel and ball size are adjusted to the orthosis. This increases the walking comfort of the child, so that it does not have to walk with shoes that are too large.
