Stoma Material

A stoma or a colostomy is a means to remove urine or stool when this is no longer possible in a natural way. Undergoing bowel surgery and then learning to live with a stoma is not easy. That is why it is important that you receive the best service at all times.

Different products and options are possible, depending on your type of stoma. There are three different types of stoma:

  • Colostomy (stoma for the colon)

This type of stoma has closed bags that you can’t empty.

  • Ileostomy (small intestine stoma)

This type of stoma has open bags that you can empty, with a wide opening at the bottom. This allows you to deflate the bag several times a day without having to remove the entire bag.

  • Urostomy (urinary tract stoma)

This type of stoma has drainable bags with a small tube that functions as a kind of tap. The urostomy is equipped with an anti-reflux mechanism, which ensures that the urine does not run back into the stoma when you bend or lie down.

Reimbursement of Stoma Material

If you qualify for a stoma, you are entitled to a grant every 3 months (this is a set amount of material). The amount depends on the type of stoma. To be eligible for this, a prescription must be entered once, this can be done by both a doctor and a specialist. The costs are fully reimbursed by the health insurance fund.
